Artist's Comments

This is my 9 year old daughter, Mikaela. She loves to model and does GREAT creepy faces. She absolutely loves doing horror shoots with me.

Recently some family members of mine decided I'm a terrible mother because I dress my children up like this and take photos. It doesn't matter that my kids love it and have a lot of fun while we're taking them. They don't see that in between takes Mikaela is laughing. We all find it funny that she can be laughing really hard then I put the camera up to my eye and she immediately goes into poses like this.

I personally find it beneficial to do these horror shoots with them. It shows them that the things they see on tv and movies are really just makeup and costumes. Since they go their dad's house on the weekends and he's not as selective about the types of things they watch, it's made it so that Mikaela not only doesn't have issues with scary movies, she loves them and they don't REALLY scare her because she realizes it's just actors and actresses playing a role like she does in these photos.

So am I a bad mother? There are a lot of things I tolerate in life. If someone criticizes my photography, my drawings, my writings, that's all fine with me. We all have different tastes and different opinions. But the one thing I don't tolerate is criticism of my parenting skills. I have 6 wonderful, awesome kids who don't go out and get into trouble, get great grades in school (one of whom is starting college next year at the age of 16), and are loving, caring people who really think about others when they do or say things.

It usually doesn't offend me when people say I'm a bad mother, because I know the truth. And by helping my kids overcome fears of scary movies, and have some fun in the process, I think I'm doing quite the opposite. I'm being a GOOD mother, and I can tell you that my children would agree.

Sorry for the rant. lol As for this photo, there were so many good ones from this shoot that I had a hard time deciding which one to post. I finally decided on this one because I liked the way her hand was behind her back, like she was hiding something, and I love her evil little smile. If you want to see the others from this shoot, check out Mikaela's DA account :iconmikaelarenee:. I'll be posting the rest of them on there this week.

You are NOT a bad mother for doing horror shoots with your kids, so please don't ever listen to any stupid people who say that you are. It sounds like Mikaela has a very healthy attitude towards horror films and photos and I admire the fact that you do your best to foster such a realistic and honest way of looking at such things. Much better than people who just flat-out won't let their kids watch anything 'scary' in the hope that they will keep their supposed innocence for a bit longer.

lol I like how you said "supposed innocence". Most people don't realize all of the things their children know. It absolutely drives me crazy when I see or hear parents saying they keep their kids sheltered from things so they can stay a kid longer. A friend of mine started dating this woman with 4 kids and I said something to him about getting all of our kids together. He told me that his girlfriend would never allow her kids to be around mine because she shelters them a lot. She hardly lets them watch any tv and wouldn't let them listen to any of the "popular" radio stations. I have to wonder, of course, if this woman realized that her school-aged children were around kids MUCH worse than mine would ever be at school each day. It's impossible to keep your kids sheltered and really, who would want to? You're not doing them any favors in the end. (Of course, I'm obviously not talking about EVERYTHING. The one thing I DO keep my kids sheltered from is sexual issues. But I still know that they know more about sex than I realize.)

I went to school with people who were sheltered like that and they were always the most screwed up people. Even some of the people who I shared accommodation with at uni were 18 year old versions of those kids. They'd never had any freedom or made decisions by themselves so as soon as they were away from home they spent half the time freaking out cause no-one was telling them what to do and the other half of the time getting mixed up in ridiculous shit cause they didn't know what to do with the sudden freedom.

That's exactly the problem and it's also where the whole "wild catholic school girl" idea came from. If your children are too repressed then the second they have some freedom they're going to make stupid choices and get into all kinds of trouble because they're suddenly being exposed to things they've never even heard of and don't know to stay away from.

Oh wow. That's great! I would have never thought of that as a way to teach kids that scary movies are fake. XD Good job. ^^~ Cute kid by the way.

Thanks. It's worked really well for us, actually. Especially with my 4 year old. She's at that age now where she's started having nightmares. The other kids LOVE to watch Charmed and the demons on there will scare her. So I remind her of how scary Mikaela looks in her pictures and we talk about the fact that it was just Mikaela pretending to be scary, just like the demons on there are just regular people pretending to be demons.

You are not a horrible mother. That's insane.

I was going to say something but I for--oh yeah, is he doing running start at the community college? There is this kid in my class who is a sophomore in college at eastern, he is 17 and in running start. He will be a graduate by 19. That's crazy. I hope he (JR) does well. :) Did you guys get a thing in the mail about the new, "if they graduate in good standing and you are still lower income, state pays for college?" letter to sign him up? I got one for Yvonne, Katie should get one at the end of this year.

16.. wow. Hard to believe that many years have (almost) gone by.

Hey if you bring my keys by, I'll pay for another year of deviantart for you... *grin*
